State of Mobile App Security: 2023 Survey Results

Verimatrix Survey Report

Cybercriminals exploit mobile apps as a gateway, emphasizing the need for robust mobile app security to prevent unauthorized access and data theft.

Surveying senior cybersecurity professionals worldwide, this report exposes the escalating reliance on mobile apps and their subpar security, especially on unmanaged devices.

Weak mobile app security on unmanaged devices is the top trend

Top findings in the 2023 report include:

  • 66% of companies have published a mobile app, confirming apps (and websites) as critical methods for companies to communicate with their customers.
  • 97% of respondents are somewhat to very aware of threats to mobile apps.
  • Only 35% of respondents think most apps are secure, yet 77% rate their own apps as moderately or highly secure.
  • Only 25% of CISOs are involved in development of apps, but most CISOs are ultimately held responsible for any security lapses.
  • Most apps – 62% – are developed in-house, up nearly 25% over the past two years.
  • 38% of respondents have built security into their CI/CD process for the development of mobile apps.
  • 70% of respondents say the biggest threat for connected devices comes from unmanaged (mostly consumer) devices.
