Attackers have mobile gaming apps in their crosshairs.
Video game companies collect massive amounts of data on its customers which is of great value to cyber attackers. Personal player information, in-game currencies, microtransactions, bank accounts linked to their gaming accounts — all make gaming companies and their mobile apps juicy targets for attackers who are looking to take advantage of game companies, payment processes, app developers, CISOs and consumers. Game publishers are honor bound to protect their IP, apps, game consoles and streaming systems from cyber criminals because if they don’t their revenue and brand reputations will suffer.

Common gaming attacks
Threat actors used a variety of malware and other cyberattacks to target gamers and the gaming industry. Examples of malware include backdoors, trojans, spyware, adware, fake apps and Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, as well as advanced jailbreaking and rooting techniques.
Mobile games are vulnerable to cyber attacks in several ways:
- Lack of in-app hardening
- In-app purchase protection and keys not safeguarded with cryptographic shielding
- Use of vulnerable third-party libraries
- Security hasn’t been integrated into their CI/CD DevOps process
- Lack of security staff to focus on new types of endpoint threats
Mobile gaming app security is critical.
Most mobile gaming apps are not protected, making them easy targets for cybercriminals. To protect against vulnerabilities, game developers and CISOS should implement strong security measures, including encryption, secure data storage, and regular software updates. They should also conduct regular security testing to identify any potential vulnerabilities in their apps. And of course, they should protect their apps.
