The Multimedia Client: The Touch Point of Content Consumption

{To bring you more information on the latest executive e-book the “Rise of the Software-Empowered Video Operator, Part II: Progressive IP and Software-based Ecosystems Deliver the Future,” we are featuring guest blog posts from the contributing authors. Deepak Das from VisualOn contributed this post - for his bio, see the About page.}

The conversation around the convergence of TV Everywhere (TVE) services and over-the-top (OTT) content providers are currently happening in silos. These conversations are not mutually exclusive, but rather intertwined together in a complex software driven ecosystem. For example, the areas of analytics, ad-insertion and security worked seamlessly when the services were independent. However the cross-platform delivery requirements can lead to breakdowns or cause complexities in these areas.

All the complex workflows lead to the multimedia client: the point of brand interaction for OTT and TVE providers. The consumer experiences the brand at this point and no matter the investment in all the upstream components, if the video playback is bad, studies have shown that the consumer just moves on.  A study from researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst along with collaborators at Akamai, entitled "Video Stream Quality Impacts Viewer Behavior: Inferring Causality using Quasi-Experimental Designs," showed that viewers begin to abandon if the video does not start up within two seconds. The report also found that viewers watch fewer minutes of the video if the video "freezes" while playing.

This has made it very important for OTT and TVE operators to understand the complexities of delivering rich content to their end users and ensuring that workflows and clients properly playback content on subscribers’ own devices.

VisualOn is helping many major TVE and OTT brands at the consumer touch point of the ecosystem.  We work with many industry partners to ensure certify workflow interoperability in order to ensure success for OTT/TVE services rollout.  Our contribution to this e-book highlights the areas that TVE and OTT operators should think about when rolling out these services.

Verimatrix has brought together an eclectic mix of companies and expertise to address the topic of “software-empowered video operators.” The companies represented in this e-book form the essential and critical pieces of enabling the OTT or TVE workflow. The range of topics addressed in this e-book give operators a comprehensive look at the challenges of OTT/TVE and how to overcome them.  VisualOn is very happy to contribute to this effort along with Elemental, Akamai, TiVo, Genius Digital and Verimatrix and raise awareness about the trend towards software-empowered video operators.

The emergence of these services is a pre-cursor to highly interactive services and currently we are just at the tip of a huge shift in consumption and user experience. Are you ready?
