For the third consecutive year, our Multi-network Forum at IBC 2014 proved that despite the gruelling demands of the five-day IBC show, delegates are prepared to get up early (at least once) to listen to operators and industry partners illuminate important trends – this year, the IP transition and the rise of the software-empowered operator.

In a three-part blog series, I highlight some of the key points discussed with moderator, Nigel Walley, and Forum panelists. The first being with Dario Vieceli, Head of TV Software Development at Swisscom.

We were very pleased by the response and feedback we received from our original executive e-book, Rise of the Software-Empowered Video Operator. It became obvious to us that people wanted to learn more about the transition to software-centric and IP-based technologies, which are becoming the building blocks for next-generation video delivery systems.

A prediction I made during a conference in Singapore last year was that the days of pay TV services as we know it – i.e. Cable/ DTH/ IPTV- will fast disappear. These businesses identified with their respective modes of distribution techniques will likely become redundant over the next 10 years. Video services will evolve dramatically. And technology will be the catalyst, not the differentiator for the service value proposition.

Back in 2008, I wrote an article with the provocative title “IPTV is dead, long live IPTV” where we made the case that that no one would be talking about IPTV in five years - in what was then the crystal ball territory beyond 2013. We believed that all video delivery systems will simply be referred to as digital TV, and IP will underpin almost every aspect, regardless if it is a telco TV network or a hybrid satellite/broadband combination.

Never has this old adage been as relevant as it is to the to the pay TV industry of today. Since the proliferation of broadband Internet and video friendly connected devices, the industry has been challenged to keep pace with changing consumer expectations and an evolving competitive landscape.

This one was buried in a useful pdf summary of the latest news on “managed” and “un-managed” pay TV operator networks: “Telcos have decided they need to be video service providers first and network operators second . . . “   So they finally get it!

We had the pleasure of sitting down with John Moulding, the editor of the report, to discuss the evolution of hybrid network offerings, and the challenges facing hybrid operators today. Following is a transcript of the conversation.Last month, Videonet released its report on The Hybrid Platform Operator, which looks at the market implications of the hybrid platform operator and considers the challenges in creating what should be a unified service through multiple networks and devices.
