Apple's QuickTime video player for iPhone OS 3 and onwards (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch etc) has integrated support for HTTP Live Streaming including link-level security mechanisms and encryption. This baseline HLS protocol provides a foundation for secure OTT delivery through link layer AES-128 encryption support. However, for secure pay-TV service delivery, an additional layer of protection is required to ensure device authentication and explicit management of key delivery, including end-user device entitlement verification.
ViewRight Web for iPhone is a library component that acts as a kernel, which can be incorporated in an operator-branded application for browsing and displaying video services. The resulting application complements the baseline security and acts as a supplement to the native QuickTime player. Without requiring any modification to QuickTime or interfering with its operation, ViewRight Web for iPhone adds the additional layer of security required for pay-TV services. This includes creating a secure link to VCAS for Internet TV head-end device rights verification via the VCAS entitlements interface.
The figure depicts high-level ViewRight Web for iPhone operation, illustrating the non-intrusive and complementary manner in which the ViewRight client enhances the native QuickTime player to enable secure OTT streaming.
