Verimatrix ViewRight® Mobile

Software-based Content Security for Mobile Devices

Pioneering smart card-less content security, Verimatrix understands the issues associated with offering a sound platform to build a versatile mobile TV business. Drawing from its market leading IPTV technology combined with its advances in software-based DVB client security, Verimatrix offers the best of both worlds in mobile client security. The Verimatrix ViewRight Mobile client is a robust package of portable embedded code that implements proven VCAS security functions for mobile devices. The code has been designed to require only a minimum of resources from the handset hardware and run-time environment. A software-based security solution, ViewRight Mobile offers best of breed content security and revenue protection in a hardened implementation that incorporates signing, multiple levels of integrity checking, key obfuscation and intrinsic renewability. It also utilizes security elements contained within the system-on-chip (SOC) when available.

ViewRight Mobile supports three mobile services network types:

  • Broadcast services, over one-way DVB-H, CMMB and FLO networks
  • Multicast and unicast services over IP-enabled telecommunications networks
  • Hybrid broadcast-IP services combining the two types of networks

In broadcast networks, ViewRight Mobile performs OSF/OpenCA-compatible processing of key management messages (KMMs; subscriber entitlements) and key stream messages (KSMs; content scrambling keys) in order to enable the handset to descramble the services that the subscriber is authorized for.

In IP and hybrid networks, the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS™) authenticates client devices using private/public key encryption methods, with entitlements uniquely encrypted for a particular mobile device or group of users. Authentication of a specific device is undertaken as a function of an X.509 certificate that confirms it is a legitimate ViewRight client implementation. Authentication also verifies that the device is connecting to a legitimate pay-TV network and VCAS installation. The mobile client then checks whether it is authorized to operate on this network. When a device is authenticated, and authorized to make key requests to the VCAS server, both streaming and broadcast key requests will involve an interaction with an entitlement server to verify key entitlement. Upon positive verification, the key will be issued and content descrambling will take place.
