Digital TV Opportunities and Challenges
The convergence of broadcasting, broadband and mobile communications is creating new opportunities and challenges throughout the media delivery value chain. Triple/quad-play operators offer a new commercial approach with a single service brand. In parallel, consumers expect similar on-demand services on the TV as on PCs and other 'connected devices'. For established Digital TV operators, commercial and technical improvements have the potential to significantly increase average revenue per user (ARPU), while reducing churn. For new classes of operators, including OTT-only services, the issues revolve around effective presentation of a compelling service value proposition, leveraging the diverse range of new screens available to consumers, which can compete with or complement traditional pay-TV.
When viewed from a global perspective, the attention being paid to Internet delivered TV services combines with a series of other transitional dilemmas facing Digital TV operators.
