Combating Piracy Creates Opportunities in Asia

Mark Holmes of ViaSatellite recently tackled the latest issues around piracy and theft of service in Asia. While analog cable systems are the biggest target for piracy, satellite pay-TV operators are certainly feeling the impact. Quoting the deputy CEO of CASBAA, “The nature of the satellite business is that it doesn’t respect national borders, so one broken satellite system in one market can impact markets around it.”

This hits on a trend in satellite that we’ve been observing – the Internet and growing availability of satellite is completely changing the way expats consume pay TV.

Verimatrix is Bringing VCAS 3 to CES

Verimatrix is Bringing
VCAS 3 to CES

Our next-generation Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS™),

which broadens the domain of traditional conditional access, will be on display at CES in January. The core value proposition for VCAS 3 shifts beyond a focus on content protection alone towards the broader perspective of revenue security.

This is a great opportunity to meet with our team to learn more:
  • Keep the pay-TV “cash register” working with a range of extended capabilities.
  • Strategies to combine OTT delivery channels with established pay-TV technologies.
  • Support online and offline video consumption models while offering a higher level of subscriber control (time and place shifting).
  • Achieve transparent user experience across devices and services with harmonized revenue security.

Schedule a meeting at CES to better understand how VCAS can meet and anticipate your revenue security needs.

Per-Ola Wester Named Technology Leader among Euro50
Digital TV Europe

Per-Ola Wester, Chief Architect, IPTV, at TeliaSonera received the title of “Technology Leader” at the inaugural Digital TV Europe Awards that took place during the Digital TV World Summit last month.

Per-Ola is known as the father of TeliaSonera’s IPTV platform, which is the heart of their success – tripling IPTV revenue in Q3 from Q2 with more than 500k subscribers and counting. His clear vision for the platform and insistence on perfection have resulted in a service that has been running flawlessly for more than two years.

In addition, concepts that Per-Ola and his team are exploring are likely to lead the way in demonstrating how the pay-TV world can expand its frontiers and deliver a truly compelling consumer experience.

Congratulations to Per-Ola and TeliaSonera!

Speaker Spotlight
The focus of the November NexTV conference (formerly TVTelco) in Buenos Aires was on emerging networks NexTV

and business models. Argentina has a telco market similar to the U.S., with a few large telcos plus hundreds of smaller cooperatives. In a recent government ruling, only the cooperatives will be allowed to offer IPTV services, and a wholesale/retail model will be required to reduce both CAPEX and OPEX.

Dennis Pearson of Iowa Network Services (INS) discussed how Verimatrix addresses their unique content security needs in an IPTV wholesale model and how that compares in the Latin American market.

Bo Ferm, Director of Product Marketing at Verimatrix, had the opportunity to discuss content security architectures for hybrid networks. He examined the evolution of content protection, which has followed the path of pay-TV networks, that takes advantage of IP-based video delivery.

Since a hybrid network is in principle a two-way IP network with a broadcast overlay, IPTV content security can be directly applied. This offers an opportunity to transition from legacy conditional access systems based on smart cards, to a single software-based system that supports both broadcast and IP.
