Cable, satellite and terrestrial operators, as well as IPTV providers, can facilitate a network transition by adopting next-generation security strategies that minimize constraints of legacy hardware-based conditional access (CA) systems.
However, how this is achieved within reasonable cost parameters varies greatly from one situation to another.
Operators can choose from several approaches ranging from complete replacement of the old with the new to various ways of supporting both for some period. Which approach is best suited depends on the challenges posed by the specific “compelling event” or trigger point that moves security to the front burner, such as:
- Add IP-based solutions to a legacy broadcast delivery framework
- Optimize bandwidth utilization by moving from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 compression
- Leverage IP technology to offer interactive applications
- Provide a converged video service for a consistent user experience across multiple devices
- Augment broadcast content with on-demand content from IP-based networks rather than building a traditional video-on-demand (VOD) infrastructure;
- Transition from analog to digital TV by leapfrogging switched digital and moving directly to a hybrid DVB/IP or all-IP framework.
